Recognition. Reflection. Repeat.

What Do We Know.

In the morning when we lift our heads,

and realize that we are not yet dead.

When we eat our food and drink our wine,

pretending the day off work is fine.

When we celebrate the love of friends,

who never will be whole again.

What do we know?

We know that there is such a holiday,

to rest our heads and fill the day.

But we also know that this very day

comes to us from disarray

was brought to us by treacherous colonizers,

and violent displacement of the folks that provided us,

with communication and access to their territory,

so we raped and pillaged in all of our infamy.

It took hundreds of years to consider this,

yet I know that I am still remiss

in my duty to highlight our cultural foundations

flush in violent death, and horrid appropriation.

I hope you know the violences our nation is founded on. Today is a day to hold the ones you love and be thankful for the fact that you have them. Today is also a day to think about the state of our nation, and our violent colonizing roots.

And why are white supremacist groups not categorized as terrorist? Never has been, never will be, in the land of the brave and the home of the free…

Until Next Time,
